Rock Chip Repair vs Windshield Replacement: What Kansas City Drivers Should Know
Learn when a rock chip can be repaired, when replacement is safer, and how to decide before the crack spreads across your windshield.
A rock chip rarely feels urgent in the moment. Then overnight cold, summer heat, or another impact turns a small ding into a crack that runs toward the edge of the glass.
Repair is usually the better first option when the chip is small, shallow, and outside the driver’s critical viewing area. Resin fills the damaged area, improves structural integrity, and can stop the chip from spreading. It is also faster and typically less expensive than a full windshield replacement.
Replacement becomes the safer path when the crack is long, the damage reaches the edge of the glass, there are multiple impact points, or the chip sits directly in your line of sight. Modern vehicles may also need ADAS camera calibration after a windshield is replaced.
If you are unsure, send Summit a photo with your vehicle year, make, and model. We will tell you honestly whether repair still makes sense or whether replacement is the better call for Kansas City driving conditions.
